Schroeder Premieres

Ferruccio Busoni

Kleine Suite, Op. 23 (1886)

Busoni, then a student at the Leipzig Conservatory, dedicated his five-movement Kleine Suite to Alwin Schroeder, with whom he gave the world premiere in the fall of 1886. During Busoni's years in Leipzig, the Gewandhaus Quartet led by Henri Petri, with Schroeder as cellist, also premiered two Busoni string quartets that the composer dedicated to the ensemble. Busoni and Schroeder collaborated again during their first season in the US (1891-2), and several times the two artists were both featured as soloists on the same Boston Symphony programs.
