Schroeder Premieres

Max Bruch

Canzone, Op. 55 (1890)

Alwin Schroeder and Boston Symphony music director Arthur Nikisch performed Bruch's Canzone on Schroeder's April 8, 1892 Boston recital in Bumfield Hall. This was the work's Boston, and likely US, premiere. "Mr. Schroeder played... a "Canzone," by Max Bruch, for the first time, in which he displayed his honest, earnest musicianship (the oak) around which twines his brilliant virtuosity (the Ivy).  Mr. Nikisch played the accompaniments in an entirely satisfactory way." (Boston Musical Herald, May 1892, p. 114)
